LCSD BOE Presents Distinguished Service Award

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

At its August 23 meeting, the Liverpool Central School District Board of Education presented its 2016 Distinguished lcsddsaaward1Service Award to Long Branch Elementary volunteer Barbara Lefler and the Liverpool Chapter of Dollars for Scholars.

Lefler, known as Grandma Lefler to students and staff at LBE, was honored for helping the Liverpool community at large. She has volunteered at LBE for more than 16 years, mostly with students in Janet Mautz’s second-grade class. While at LBE, she does whatever needs to be done to help students - whether assisting them with reading and math or purchasing items for those in need. In addition to LBE, Grandma Lefler volunteers throughout the community by teaching religious education, assisting other seniors or volunteering at the local food pantry.

Liverpool DFS was honored for its commitment to Liverpool students. Since its inception in 1970, the organization has awarded approximately 4,500 scholarships worth more than $1.5 million to Liverpool High School graduates. Its Board of Directors is one of the largest and most active in the country, and each year it organizes three major fund-raisers – a Bowl-a-Thon, Phone-a-Thon/Mail-a-Thon and Golf Tournament – and holds numerous fund-raisers at local businesses. In 2011, the group was recognized by Scholarship America as the New York State/ Regional Chapter of the Year.

The Distinguished Service Award was created as a way to recognize outstanding and long-standing commitment, contributions, interest, dedication, achievement and/or community service.

The award is presented each year to an individual or organization that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Has made a significant and positive impact on our community (the village of Liverpool, the towns of Clay or Salina, or the county of Onondaga) and who has made a difference in the lives of our residents and/or students
  • Has brought honor or positive public recognition to our community
  • Has made significant contributions or has enriched the quality of life, vitality, health, welfare, success or diversity of our community
  • Is otherwise determined to be worthy of such an award.
